KTM 690 Duke Returns to U.S. for 2013

KTM North America announces two new model additions to its 2013 street lineup. Making the announcement at the Long Beach IMS, KTM welcomes the return of its Duke 690. The Austrians will also import a Baja badged version of its 990 ADV bike. Absent from the 2013 American roster is the Duke 390, an entry-level street bike that debuted at EICMA.
Duke 690 Returns
The 690 Duke returns to the U.S. lineup after a short absence. MotoUSA grew fond of previous incarnations of the little Duke, winning a 2009 comparison test agains the Aprilia Dorsoduro. In fact, one of our editors liked it so much, it became a personal ride featured as a long-term project bike (2009 KTM Duke 690 Project).
This latest edition of the 690 Duke, which was redesigned for the 2012 model year, sports a different look. Gone is the belly pan and aggressive cowling (a divisive styling trait that split opinion) of the pre-2012 version. This new Duke is a stripped down, more naked middleweight than its predecessor.
KTM promises 70 horsepower from its big 690cc liquid-cooled Single. The engine features a redesigned cylinder head and makes use of ride-by-wire technology, with the Duke utilizing KTM’s APTC slipper clutch. The chassis is comprised of a chromoly steel trellis frame with WP suspension and Brembo brakes. The returning Duke will be available in two colorways, black and white.

New KTM Adventure
No, Americans won’t get KTM’s 1190 Adventure revealed earlier this year during the annual bike show first look season. That Adventure, which is powered by the RC8 Superbike-derrived V-Twin, won’t hit U.S. shores until the 2014 model year. Instead, Americans get the 990 Adventure Baja, which KTM promises was “built specifically for the North American market.”
Similar in concept to the up-spec Dakar edition from previous years, the Adventure Baja features special race-inspired graphics. It also comes with crash bars and radiator guard, LED auxiliary lights and suede-style seat as standard features. The Baja also sports touring kit like GPS base mount, tank bag and waterproof rear luggage bag. The special edition model also rolls on Dunlop 908 RR tires. Aesthetic enhancements include an orange powder-coated frame.
1190 RC8 R & Dual-Sports
Team Orange doubles in size on the AMA Superbike grid, with KTM announcing it has signed Taylor Knapp to joing Chris Fillmore on the KTM/HMC Superbike Team. The duo will continue to campaign the 1190 RC8 R. KTM touts a new look for its Superbike racing platform, as well as a new slipper clutch.
The remainder of the KTM 2013 street lineup will be comprised of the 990 SM T. The Supermoto-ish touring platform from the Austrians. KaTooM also brings back the 690 Enduro R and the fellow street-legal enduro EXC lineup – including the 500 EXC and 350 EXC-F.
